Presented by Jacob Cepollina and Lauren Pulido

This presentation provides mental health providers practical tools to make a more welcoming, inclusive environment for transgender individuals. The training covers introductory concepts such as: sex, gender, sexuality, an overview of terminology relating to pronouns, identities, and transition, as well as allyship best practices. This training is also appropriate for youth, student groups, and families who have limited exposure with these concepts. Participants will have the opportunity to practice affirming introductions in session workshop. Resources provided.

By the end of this presentation, participants should have a deeper understanding of trans identity and should feel more confident in their ability to serve the trans community.

    Learning Objectives

    • To increase familiarity with the nuances of biological sex, gender identity, gender presentation, and pronouns while also covering important terms and outlining best practices for working with the transgender community.
    • Provide an introduction to transgender identity through a general overview of key concepts related to gender identity and expression.
    • Have a deeper understanding of trans identity and should feel more confident in their ability to serve the trans community.

    About the Presenters

Lauren Pulido (He/They) has had the honor of serving GHC as Co-Executive Director and Co-Director of Advocacy since October 2021 and as a board member since March 2021. He is a proud trans-masculine, nonbinary Mexican-Italian American and has lived in Sacramento most of his life. He graduated from CSU Sacramento in 2019 with a BA in Women’s Studies and minor in LGBTQ+ Studies, becoming the first person to graduate with an LGBTQ+ minor. In 2019, Lauren held a position with California State Assembly’s representative for District 7 (Sacramento) and helped establish raising the Transgender pride flag at the California State Capitol in 2019, 2020, and 2021 to honor Transgender Day of Remembrance. Lauren currently lives in East Sacramento with his wife, four cats, and their giant tortoise. He will forever dedicate his life to leaving a better world than he has been given and enriching and supporting his community and his transgender family.

Jacob Cepolinno is passionate about working with trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming youth in a manner that focuses on their passions and creativity while simultaneously celebrating varying embodiment and striving for gender-affirmation. In addition, Jacob feels strongly about serving trans adolescents and young adults who have been harmed by the strict imposition of the gender binary, especially in relation to religious trauma. In June 2020, Jacob graduated from UCLA with a major in English and a minor in Disability Studies, and in May 2022 will graduate from the MSW program at USC with a concentration in Children, Youth, and Families. Before beginning her current role as the Director of Mental Health, she served our community as a counseling intern here at the Gender Health Center.
