    "Child Abuse and Neglect"
Presenter:  Kristin Roscoe , JD, CAMFT Staff Attorney

    Webinar Description:

Sometimes, child abuse or neglect is obvious, and you don’t even hesitate before calling CPS or law enforcement. Unfortunately, most of your obligations as a mandated reporter live in that horrible grey area. Is what your patient reports even something that could trigger obligations to report? Do you have reasonable suspicion that child abuse or neglect may have occurred? What is reasonable suspicion? Have you ever found yourself asking these types of questions? If so, this three-hour workshop will provide attendees with an overview of those obligations outlined in California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) to be more confident when presented with potential reporting issues.

        Measurable Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

        1. Identify the categories of child abuse and neglect under California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act

        2. Identify the three entities a mandated reporter is permitted to report to

        3. Distinguish between those reporting obligations that are mandated versus permissive
        4. State the amount of time a mandated reporter has to make an initial verbal report and the subsequent written report

        ~

We’re excited to introduce our new monthly book club, launching this April, as a space for thoughtful discussion, professional growth, and collective healing.

Our first selection is My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem, a powerful exploration of racialized trauma, somatic healing, and the ways we hold generational pain in our bodies. Through this book, we will engage in meaningful conversations about healing practices and how they relate to both our personal and professional lives as therapists.

This book club is open to SVC-CAMFT chapter members interested in deepening their understanding of trauma, embodiment, and healing in a supportive community. Whether you’ve read the book before or are diving in for the first time, we welcome your insights and reflections.

If you're interested in joining, please RSVP by  April 24th so we can provide additional details.

We look forward to learning, growing, and healing together. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Suicide Risk Assessment & Management: Essential Strategies for Clinicians

        Friday, May 9, 2025

        8:30am - 9am (Check-in, light pastries, & coffee)
        9am-12pm (event presentation)

        3 CE credits
        In person

        Description

Suicide risk assessment and crisis intervention are critical competencies for mental health professionals working in diverse clinical settings. This workshop provides licensed therapists with evidence-based strategies for assessing, managing, and documenting suicide risk while maintaining ethical and legal standards.

Grounded in well-established psychological principles, this training integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention (Stanley & Brown, 2012), the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (Joiner, 2008), and crisis intervention models such as the EAR Method (Burns, 2010). Participants will learn how to distinguish between static and dynamic risk factors, differentiate risk status from risk state, and apply clinical decision-making frameworks to determine appropriate interventions.

The workshop explores best practices in suicide risk formulation, emphasizing structured risk assessment tools, direct inquiry techniques, and protective factor evaluation to promote client safety. Participants will also gain skills in crisis communication and de-escalation, learning how to engage distressed clients using validation, rapport-building techniques, and structured intervention models. The course highlights common pitfalls in risk assessment, such as over-reliance on screening tools or inadequate documentation, and provides strategies to ensure clear, legally defensible clinical records.

Additionally, the training addresses the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in suicide risk assessment, reviewing current research on AI-driven prediction models (Guntuku et al., 2021) while critically examining the ethical and practical limitations of AI-assisted clinical decision-making.

        Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

        1. Identify key suicide warning signs and risk factors and apply validated risk assessment strategies to inform clinical interventions.
        2. Differentiate between risk status and risk state to determine appropriate levels of care and intervention planning.
        3. Effectively engage clients in safety planning, de-escalate crisis situations, and document risk management strategies in compliance with legal and ethical guidelines.

"Mastering Mandated Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Reporting"
Presenter:  Bradley J. Muldrow, JD, CAMFT Staff Attorney

        Presentation Description

Although elder and dependent adult reporting is one of the most common legal issues therapists navigate in practice, it tends to receive much less focus than child abuse reporting. This workshop will provide a detailed overview of the mandated reporting procedures outlined in California’s Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act, including the different types of reportable elder and dependent adult abuse, the types of California agencies that receive mandated elder and dependent adult abuse reports, and how much time mandated reporters have to make these reports.

The workshop will also address some of the most complex reporting issues therapists face, including: how the reporting requirements differ when alleged elder or dependent adult abuse victims reside outside of California, how to determine if a patient constitutes a “dependent adult,” and the types of abuse for which elder and dependent adult abuse reporting is mandated (as opposed to optional).

        Educational Goals

Participants will become familiar with the categories of reportable elder and dependent adult abuse, under the Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act. Participants will understand the procedures for making mandated and optional elder and dependent adult abuse reports, under the Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act. Participants will further understand how much time California mandated reporters have to complete and submit mandated and optional elder and dependent adult abuse reports.

          Measurable Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

          1. Participants will be able to identify the six categories of elder and dependent adult abuse California mandated reporters are required to report.

          2. Participants will be able to identify the specific California agencies that are authorized to receive mandated elder and dependent adult abuse reports.
          3. In applicable circumstances, participants will be able to distinguish the amount of time California mandated reporters have to make initial phone reports of elder and dependent adult abuse vs. written follow-up reports regarding elder and dependent adult abuse.
          4. Participants will be able to state which forms of elder and dependent adult abuse are optional (as opposed to mandated) for mandated reporters to report, under the Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act.

"Working with Minor Clients: Prepare for Success and Avoid the Pitfalls"

            Webinar Description:

Working with minors requires an understanding of the laws and ethical standards that pertain to minor consent and the authority that minors, and/or others, have over the minor’s clinical information. Additionally, working with minors may involve the need to interact and share information with third parties. During this three (3) hour presentation, CAMFT Staff Attorney Alain Montgomery will review California minor consent laws and common issues related to the confidentiality of the minor’s healthcare information.

            Educational Goals:

Participants will gain a better understanding of the applicable laws and the CAMFT ethical standards that relate to minor consent, the release of a minor’s health care information, and conflict of interest issues related to the treatment of minors. As a result of the workshop, participants will be better equipped to make informed and legally and ethically sound decisions when working with minors.

            Learning Objectives:

            • Identify the ethical standards relevant to a therapist’s duty to determine who has the legal authority to provide consent and treatment for a minor.
            • Explain the rights of minors to control the right of access to their information.
            • Distinguish when parents and other non-parental adults have the legal authority to consent treatment for a minor and exercise control over a minor’s healthcare information.
            • Understand how to manage the varied roles that third parties may play during the course of the minor’s treatment.
