This program will benefit LMFT, LPCC, LEP and LCSW licensees and pre licensees by teaching participants the basic theory and interventions of EFT couples therapy. This information can easily be applied to particpant's clinical work with clients. EFT is based on Humanistic Experiential model theory and practice. It is non pathologizing and helps therapists to be empathic and compasionate in treating their clients.
This presentation will describe the EFT Stages and Steps that guide couples through three change events and lead to more connection and secure bonding. We will teach participants how, in Stage One, EFT helps couples identify their negative interactional patterns that keep couples disconnected and in distress. Furthermore, we will introduce the EFT “Tango” which describes how to help couples engage in new ways -- undoing their reactivity and facilitating more security. We will then describe Stage Two, which will show how EFT takes couples to even deeper levels of healing. EFT interventions, present process, and a systemic perspective (characterized by a Rogerian humanistic experiential orientation) will be demonstrated. Privileging emotion through an attachment perspective is the key to EFT and will be illustrated through the presentation. We will also briefly include how this understanding is used effectively with individuals and families. "In terms of outcome and process-of-change studies, EFT, more than any other approach, exemplifies the highest or ideal level of empirical validation as laid out by the American Psychological Association for couple and family therapy (Sexton et al., 2011)."
1. Describe how emotion is used in EFT
2. Explain basic attachment theory and how it impacts EFT.
