This program will benefit LMFT, LPCC, LEP and LCSW licensees and pre licensees by helping to increase understanding of the disorder, its implications, or its treatment modalities, so therapists will be able to successfully treatment patients with Opiate use disorder. This workshop will assist with equipping clinicians with the tools needed to treat this patient population.
Opiate use disorder is common, with significant clinical consequences (~70k overdose deaths/year in the US). Therapy is a critical part of a compressive, effective treatment program. Medications have been shown to have important clinical benefit, but are often overlooked parts of a treatment plan. This workshop will discuss the goals of treatment, as well as the role medications play in treatment. We will discuss risks and benefits of various medication approaches, as well as what the therapist can expect to see as a result of these medications. Lastly, the role of effective therapy (and how this can be structured) in the overall treatment of opiate use disorder will be reviewed and discussed.
1. Able to Name 3 medications used in the treatment of opiate use disorder
2. Identify and explain the cycle of chemical coping
3. Describe opiate use disorder in the context of a chronic relapsing remitting disease
