This was such an important training. It was both well
received and well attended.
Our March training will be: “From Clinician to Confident
CEO: How to have more ease, more time off and more profit.: Our March presenter will be: Casey Truffo,
LMFT. This will be an all day training (9:30-4:30 PM. 8:30-9:30 will be for
networking. We hope to see you there.
Our chapter sent 4 members to the CAMFT Leadership
Conference this year. Thank you to all
that attended for volunteering your time on behalf of your chapter and
colleagues. They came back with new ideas that will be presented to fellow
board members at the Board retreat on March 9th, 2019.
Lastly, 2020 is the 50th anniversary of SVC
CAMFT. We are beginning discussions on how to celebrate US. Please forward any
ideas to the SVC CAMFT administrative assistant, or a board member.

News from the BBS
There are many law changes that you need to be aware of as a Board licensee, registrant, or
applicant. While this document highlights some of the bigger changes, the Board highly
recommends reading the bills referenced for greater clarity. The discussed changes become
effective on January 1, 2019, unless otherwise noted. (This is only a small portion covering criminal convictions - the whole document is located at https://bbs.ca.gov/pdf/legupdate_18.pdf)
Criminal Convictions
Effective July 1, 2020, the Board may only deny a license on grounds that an applicant has
been convicted of a crime or subject to formal discipline if one of the following conditions are
met:
1. The applicant has been convicted of a crime within 7 years of the date of their application
that is substantially related to the qualifications, functions, or duties of the profession. The
7-year limit does not apply to convictions for a serious felony (defined in Penal Code
§1192.7), or for those who must register as a sex offender as described in Penal Code
§290(d)(2) or (3).
2. The applicant has been subject to formal discipline by a licensing board within the past 7
years if it was for professional misconduct that would have been cause for disciplinary action
by the Board and is substantially related to the profession. (The prior disciplinary action
cannot be used to deny if it was based on a dismissed or expunged conviction.)
For a full description of the changes related to licensing and convictions, see AB 2138. The
Board is in the process of developing regulations to comply with the provisions of this bill.
Information about the new process, as well as instructions for applicants with convictions who
are applying during the transition period (the period just before July 1, 2020), will be available
before the effective date.

In this workshop you will learn how to work with these clients, legal and ethical concerns, as well as learning what your boundaries are and holding your boundaries with this population.

Carla Friend enjoys working with children, adolescents, teens and their families by helping them work through difficult times such as trauma, divorce, self harm, building self esteem, finding the right education/social/family balance, effective communication, setting healthy boundaries and navigating through the difficulties that they face daily.

This program will benefit LMFT, LPCC, LEP and LCSW licensees and pre licensees by introducing attendees to EMDR Therapy which is a evidencebased therapy.
Includes: Breakfast and meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Sacramento Valley Chapter of California Marriage and Family Therapists (SVC-CAMFT) CAMFT CEPA CE Provider #62279 is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor Continuing Education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. SVC-CAMFT maintains the responsibility for the program and all its content. CE Credit will be awarded after the completion of the course via email in exchange for a completed course evaluation form.
No CEs will be awarded to persons arriving late or leaving early. Partial CE credit will not be awarded.
Workshop Information:
Come and learn more about EMDR Therapy. Kim Johnson will be providing a wealth of information regarding what EMDR Therapy is, how it works and how to integrate in your clinical practice. After the presentation you will be able to answer most of your clients' questions about EMDR Therapy. So, come with an open mind, ready to learn and ask questions. Kim particularly invites audience interaction.
1. Participants will learn about how EMDR Therapy works, specifically the Adaptive Information Processing, the neurobiology of memory and right brain psychotherapy which enhances attachment.
2. Participants will learn how to integrate EMDR into their clinical practices utilizing it with children as young as age 2 and most diagnoses. Examples of clinical cases will be provided.
3. Participants will have the opportunity to observe a live demonstration of EMDR Therapy.
Presenter Bio:
Kim Johnson, L.C.S.W. was trained in EMDR in 2000. Over the years she became an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, Approved Consultant and Trainer for EMDR Basic Training. Ms. Johnson has been in private practice for over 25 years and integrates EMDR with most of her clients. She specializes integrating EMDR with children and clients diagnosed with dissociative disorders. Additionally, she is involved in the EMDR community and encourages therapists to learn more about EMDR Therapy.

“Saying Goodbye”

I am in the process of saying good-bye. My friend is dying, she has maybe 4-6 weeks (hopefully a few more than that if she is not in pain). She has been a business partner, colleague, friend, confidant, and chosen family member. In the last few years she became a major part of my life. She has had friends for 40+ years and I have had some friends for 20+ years and yet our short in years friendship has been very strong and connected. I am constantly told how sweet and wonderful I am for constantly visiting my friend now that she lives in Reno and I still live here in Sacramento. It really is not so altruistic on my side, I love her and I want to spend every moment I can with her before she is gone. I am willing to face and sit with the discomfort of her end of life to have those moments. I am able to sit with her in those painful moments and discussion of her end of life. It is not to say that I am not torn up inside about it, but I am able to hold her emotions and just stay in the moment with her. I do have a therapist that I do my own personal work with my emotions.
So what is saying goodbye. It is personal and different for each one of us. For me it is the process of changing my relationship with my friend into a positive part of myself. I try to take all of the best parts of our friendship and bring that into my own personality. I think of what she would tell me when I am struggling with a client or my daughter or frustrated with the current politics and discuss it with her in my head. The best part is since she is still with me, I often choose something that I had thought about what she would say and ask her and see what she would have actually said.
I am also learning how important it is to stay in the moment. I have always been a planner and scheduler and looking what the future should be, I am now learning how wonderful it is just to enjoy the moment. This weekend (if I am able to get to Reno with this snow) she and I will go out to see a movie. When we watch the movie that is what we do, just sit and enjoy. Afterwards we discuss it and enjoy a meal. Those are the memories I want to hold on to when I have to say goodbye.
She will probably never know how much she has helped me, in her dying, to teach me the power of being in the moment. I will never really say goodbye completely, she will always be with me, but it is hard to think of the day when I cannot just pick up the phone and call her and her voice and opinions about something. Goodbye is going to be hard, I know that, but until then I will enjoy every single moment I get with her.
