It has been several years since I served as the SVC-CAMFT
president. Since then, the association has prospered and made great strides
under the leadership of Patricia St. James, LMFT and Talal Alsaleem, LMFT, PsyD.
I would like to express my heart felt appreciation to both
of them for all of their hard work on behalf of our chapter. Each of them brought new ideas and left our
chapter healthier and stronger because of it.
I would also like to take the opportunity to officially
thank Heather Blessing, LMFT who has served as the backbone to our organization
for several years. She is an unsung hero of our chapter. She continuously
works hard (often behind the scenes) to
assure that the organization stays strong and moves forward.

News from the BBS
There are many law changes that you need to be aware of as a Board licensee, registrant, or
applicant. While this document highlights some of the bigger changes, the Board highly
recommends reading the bills referenced for greater clarity. The discussed changes become
effective on January 1, 2019, unless otherwise noted. (This is only a small portion covering only the Supervisor Qualifications and Responsibilities - the whole document is located at https://bbs.ca.gov/pdf/legupdate_18.pdf)
Supervisor Qualifications and Responsibilities
There are several law changes that apply to existing supervisors and individuals who wish to
supervise those pursuing licensure as a marriage and family therapist (LMFT), professional
clinical counselor (LPCC), or clinical social worker (LCSW). Highlights are below. For complete
information, please see AB 93.
• The Board now has the authority to audit supervisors to ensure they meet the qualifications
to supervise. All supervisors must keep records of his or her qualifications for 7 years from
the termination of supervision to prove they meet the qualifications in case of an audit. If
you are a supervisor, please ensure that you meet the requirements to supervise and that
you save your materials to document compliance. Additional information about the audits
will be available in the Board’s upcoming newsletter, to be released in January.
• A supervisor must meet all the following requirements; some of which have been changed
by AB 93:
o Held an active license for at least 2 years of the 5-year period immediately preceding
any supervision as an LPCC, LMFT, licensed psychologist, LCSW, a licensed
physician and surgeon certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry
and Neurology, or an equivalent out-of-state license;
o For at least 2 of the past 5 years immediately preceding supervision, the supervisor
has practiced psychotherapy or provided direct clinical supervision of psychotherapy
performed by marriage and family therapist trainees, associate marriage and family
therapists (AMFTs), associate professional clinical counselors (APCCs), or associate clinical social workers (ASWs). Supervision of psychotherapy performed by social
work interns (students) or professional clinical counselor trainees is also acceptable
if the supervision is substantially equivalent to the supervision required for board
o Has and maintains a current, active California license that is not under suspension or
probation, as an LMFT, LPCC, LCSW, a licensed psychologist, or a physician and
surgeon certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology;
o Has received supervision training as required by the board;
o If the supervisor is an LPCC who is supervising an AMFT, MFT trainee, or LPCC
licensee or registrant seeking experience to treat couples and families, he or she
must meet the requirements to treat couples and families specified in BPC §4999.20;
o Has not provided therapeutic services to the supervisee;
o Is not a spouse, domestic partner, or relative of the supervisee; and
o Does not have or has not had a personal, professional, or business relationship with
the supervisee that undermines the authority or effectiveness of the supervision.
• Specifies certain actions that are a supervisor’s responsibility (this is not an all-inclusive list):
o Ensuring the extent, kind, and quality of counseling performed is consistent with the
education, training, and experience of the supervisee.
o Monitoring and evaluating the supervisee’s assessment, diagnosis, and treatment
decisions and providing regular feedback.
o Monitoring and evaluating the supervisee’s ability to provide services at the site or
sites where he or she is practicing and to the particular clientele being served.
o Monitoring and addressing clinical dynamics, including, but not limited to,
countertransference, intrapsychic, interpersonal, or trauma related issues that may
affect the supervisory or practitioner-patient relationship.
o Ensuring the supervisee’s compliance with laws and regulations governing the
practice of marriage and family therapy, clinical social work, or professional clinical
o Reviewing the supervisee’s progress notes, process notes, and other patient
treatment records, as deemed appropriate by the supervisor.
o With the client’s written consent, providing direct observation or review of audio or
video recordings of the supervisee’s counseling or therapy, as deemed appropriate
by the supervisor.
• Group supervisors are required to ensure that the amount and degree of supervision is
appropriate for each supervisee.
• Permits a supervisor of individuals pursuing LCSW or LPCC licensure to arrange for
alternative supervision during his or her vacation or sick leave if in compliance with the law’s
supervision requirements. (This provision was already specified in the law for supervisors of
those pursing LMFT licensure.)
• If a setting is not a private practice, and if the supervisor is not employed by the supervisee’s
employer or is a volunteer, the supervisee’s employer and supervisor must sign a written
oversight agreement as specified in regulation.
Introduction to Stanford Cue-Centered Therapy – a short-term, evidence-based trauma treatment
presented by Laura Strom, LMFT
Laura C. Strom, LMFT, LPCC, CRC is a Stanford-trained trauma therapist and worked for the Stanford Early Life Stress Research Program. She provided in depth information about the ACE Study and how it the score correlates to health issues. Laura discussed how spanking relates to abuse and the issues related to spanking based on studies. She also discussed studies of brain imaging and ACE scores. There was so much information about how children are affected by traumatic events and possible solutions.

Sacramento Valley Chapter of California Marriage and Family Therapists (SVC-CAMFT) CAMFT CEPA CE Provider #62279 is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor Continuing Education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. This presentation by Lisa Larson, LMFT, a Positive Discipline Instructor, and Dr. Jane Nelsen, Ed.D, the author of Positive Discipline for Teenagers and numerous other parenting books is humorous, lively and includes experiential activities you can use in your sessions as well as very useful hand-outs to give your teen families. For twenty-five years, Positive Discipline has been the gold standard reference for parenting children and teens.
Adolescence is often a time of great stress and turmoil not only for adolescents but for their parents as well. During this time, kids aggressively begin to explore a new sense of freedom, which often leads to feelings of resentment and powerlessness for parents who increasingly are excluded from their children's lives. This workshop will teach you to help your clients successfully navigate this tumultuous time by seeing the value of a shift toward a “co-pilot” role, in which parents gradually cede more responsibility to teens, giving teens the chance to make some mistakes while parents are there to provide a safety net. You will learn to help your clients to view their teens mistakes as very important opportunities for learning before they leave the nest. This class will help your families build connection and confront their own fears, as they support their teens’ growing independence and capabilities.
You will be able to help your teen families escape the destructive cycle of guilt and blame and work toward greater understanding, communication and collaboration with their adolescents. Many of us worry about whether we are equipped to support parents who may be dealing with unmotivated or rebellious teens, early sexual activity, or drug and alcohol use, especially when the stakes are so high. This workshop will help you learn the life-changing principles of Positive Discipline and give you confidence in your ability to help the most challenging teen families. It will help you be equipped to include challenging teen parenting issues within your scope of practice.
1. Feel confident supporting parents of teens by learning the number one most effective parenting technique for teenagers on any issue from following through on chores to handling major behavioral mistakes or issues.
2. Coach parents to be both firm and kind, so that any rebellious teenager can learn creative cooperation and self-discipline with no loss of dignity.
3. Teaching your teen parents the definition and difference between enabling and empowering their adolescents.
Presenter Bio: Lisa Larson has been a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for the past nineteen years. After seven years in private practice doing Solution Focused therapy or "talk therapy," Lisa experienced a traumatic event that transformed the course of her life as well as her therapeutic orientation. Lisa and then her teenage son, just a few weeks later, flat lined, that is, clinically died. They had unrelated allergic reactions and fortunately both have fully recovered. Lisa was acutely traumatized and had a classic case of PTSD. No amount of talk therapy worked. In contrast, after only two sessions of EMDR she was back to being herself.
Training under Dr. David Grand, founder of Brainspotting, Lisa immediately recognized the powerful neurophysiological healing fortex Brainspotting taps into as she saw her severely traumatized clients heal quickly and permanently. Lisa opened Pacific Counseling and Trauma Center in 2012 and Pacific Trauma Specialists, a non-profit dedicated to offering cutting edge trauma therapy and is now a certified Brainspotting Trainer. Lisa co-authored the book Positive Discipline for Working Parents with Jane Nelson.
Dr. Jane Nelsen is a California licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Adlerian Diplomate, and author or co-author of 20 books, including the Positive Discipline series, Raising Self-Reliant Children in a Self-Indulgent World, Serenity, Positive Discipline Tool Cards, and Keeping the Joy in Marriage Tool Cards and eBook. She earned her Ed.D. from the University of San Francisco, but her formal training has been secondary to her hands-on training as the mother of seven and grandmother of 22, and great grandmother of 5. She now shares this wealth of knowledge and experience as a popular keynote speaker and workshop leader throughout the country—and as a popular presenter at NASAP conferences.

Friday Law and Ethics and Saturday Law and Ethics will have different lunch buffets.
We will have Law and Ethics for Supervisors on Friday of our Law and Ethics in addition to our regular Friday Law and Ethics. Saturday Law and Ethics will go over the Therapist Will among other things. More option to choose from.
While it doesn't qualify for CEUs, we will be having a 6 hour workshop on building a successful practice with the renowned Casey Truffo.
So it is December 31 at 9:15pm and I am desperately trying to come up with the content for this newsletter. I had an idea of New Year's Resolutions and realized I wrote that last year. So I thought maybe I should respond to some of the suggestions, complaints and survey responses so everyone can see a more transparent SVC-CAMFT.
Newsletters: I have had suggestions for more columns, more information and more authors. It has been suggested that content cover more than just private practice information but for those who work in the public sector too.
I totally agree with needing more columns, more authors, more content, more diversity and more information for those who work in the public sector. I would really like to implement this and have tried, unfortunately, just as I am writing this article right now, no one else turned in anything, even those who said they would, So please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org about writing articles or even authors you think would be willing to submit an article (we do not pay for articles and it cannot be an article that is really an advertisement.) I will publish anything that is respectful and appropriately written.
Workshops: Days of the week - we have had many requests for Saturdays and evenings.
There are two major issues on this - 1. Every year we do have one Saturday event which is a 2-Day Law and Ethics. Last year of those who were signed up for Saturday Law and Ethics only 4 were people who were only taking Saturday the rest of the attendees were taking the 2-Day 12 CE course. Previously Saturday sessions were attended by less than 5 people. 2. Saturday workshops cost more - the facility charges more for evening and weekend hours, if we want catering, it often costs more too. I believe though in testing the waters and we may try to have a CARE workshop and do it on a Saturday to see if we would get enough participation. Please note that was MAY have a workshop, we still need to get more volunteers to help us create these other workshops and support other workshop times.
Topics and Speakers - people want different subjects and content and speakers.
Please email speaker suggestions to email@example.com also topics. If you know anyone who is an expert on a topic please let us know. And I will be honest - I work in private practice so if you are in the public sector and want more public sector topics, can you let me know what that is and who you would like to speak - we work as a team but if it isn't in our group knowledge we need direction.
Diversity - need more diversity.
We are really working on becoming more diverse. If you know a speaker let us know. In 2018 we started CARE Task Force and had a workshop on the Stephon Clark shooting. The CARE Task Force helped the Program Committee to know that we need to work in more diversity and cultural workshops - we got one 6 hour workshop with 3 panel speakers covering several topics. We hope to continue providing more diversity but we need more speakers. We are dedicated to making this a major change in our programming. Help us seek out the speakers that will make this happen. We will be planning 2020 in July\August of 2019 - so please let us know so we can make sure we book them next year. Please note we are trying to always having June (Pride month) to focus on LGBTQQIAA+ issues.
Networking Opportunities:Suggestions on more networking options, networking locations, structure and opportunities for newer therapists to discuss cases with more seasoned therapists.
Here is where we really need your help. The board is already stretched thin, we need people who can host and run this networking opportunities. We already have made it a full hour before our workshops and we have the Job Fair but we would like to do more, but need others to step up and offer locations and suggestions. We will see if we can add a little bit more structure at some of our workshops, we will need some volunteers for this as everyone is already stretched thin since we have two rooms running at that time.
Advocacy: Our members want us to do more.
This can only happen if we have more volunteers willing to take on a volunteer- leadership role. Please contact us at email@example.com if you are interested.
And a personal note: I am happy to say that my practice is growing, but this means I cannot work\volunteer for all of the extra things that our members want so we need more to volunteer especially in leadership type roles.

Review: It is a remake of A Star is Born which has been made 2 other times. It is a movie that shows addiction, trauma, co-dependence and suicide. It really shows that even after rehab, there is so much more that must be done for those around the addict and the addict. A very moving story.
