Workshop Information

In this Law and Ethics Training participants will have the opportunity to be immersed in the basic foundation of the laws and ethical guidelines that guide and protect clinical practice. Up to date changes in rules and regulations will be integrated throughout. Use of video scenarios to invite audience participation along with small group discussions, questions that support a deeper learning environment.

Choice of 6 hours by coming to DAY ONE ONLY CLASS or DAY TWO ONLY CLASS or 12 hours by coming to BOTH DAYS.

Day #1
Builds the foundation of knowledge of our laws and ethics that may be helpful as a reminder to those that are seasoned practitioners, registered associates preparing for the law and ethics examination, or those that are supervising pre-licensed clinicians.

Day #2
Goes deeper into what is more prevalent in our clientele in today’s culture such as; How tele-health has become the norm, the use of social media, and some of the pitfalls we find ourselves in. We will also utilize video scenarios, small group discussions, questions, that support a deeper learning environment.

Presenter Bio
Darlene Davis, MA, LMFT, LPCC

Darlene Davis has been a licensed marriage and family therapist since 2004 and an LPCC since 2014. She is very involved in the mental health field and how law and ethics can allow for creativity in the therapy session. She has taught at the master's level for clinical psychology for 12 years, has served on the CAMFT Ethics Committee from 2012 to 2020. She is an expert consultant for the BBS. She is the founder and CEO of HOPE Counseling Center a non-profit agency that is committed to training therapists with integrity while offering low cost therapy to the community. She also has a private practice where she specializes in couples work. She is trained in Gottman level I and II, she completed an EFT externship, is trained in EMDR and Brainspotting, and was awarded the Mary Reimersma Distinguished Clinical Member Award from CAMFT in 2018.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify what are the four allowable scenarios for disclosing confidential information
  2. Identify two differences between a boundary crossing and a boundary violation
  3. Identify new advertisement rules for licensed and pre-licensed clinicians

Clinicians participating in this Law and Ethics workshop will become more proficient in identifying and utilizing the laws and ethics that govern our profession. Participants will understand when and why it is important to break confidentiality, how to keep confidentiality when appropriate, how to advertise online and in hard copy formats that meet the regulations set forth by the BBS, understand how HIPAA dictates how we perform telehealth, and understanding our professional boundaries to protect our clients from harm.

This training is meant to allow flexibility in attending one day or both days - Each day offers it's own teaming objectives so choose what is important to you!

No CEs will be awarded to persons arriving late or leaving early. Partial CE credit will not be awarded.

Complies with 6 hour Law and Ethics requirements for Continuing Education required by BBS.  The two-day course complies with the BBS 12-hour course requirement to be eligible to retake the CA law and ethics exam.  This is not an exam prep class.

Includes: 6 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Sacramento Valley Chapter of California Marriage and Family Therapists (SVC-CAMFT) CAMFT CEPA CE Provider #62279 is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor Continuing Education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. SVC-CAMFT maintains the responsibility for the program and all its content. CE Credit will be awarded after the completion of the course via email in exchange for a completed course evaluation form.
