Letter from the Board

March 04, 2016

Dear {Contact_First_Name} {Contact_Last_Name},
Every year SVC-CAMFT board members have a long meeting (4+ hours) which we call a board retreat.  This year’s board retreat is the first weekend of April.  This is an opportunity for the board members that attended the CAMFT Leadership Conference to share new concepts and bring in new ideas from other chapters to the other SVC-CAMFT board members.  During this retreat, we are able to implement new ideas and concepts that match the mission of SVC-CAMFT.  We also set goals and objectives and design what the rest of the year will look like and help set the plan for the following year.  We will also be looking at our Mission and Vision statement for any changes or tweaks that we might need and bring it to the membership for a vote.
We had a wonderful March presentation by Dr. Mikal-Flynn.  And look forward to our next presentation “An Introduction to John Gottman’s Bringing Baby Home" by Carolyn Rich-Curtis, PhD.  Registration will be opening shortly for our Law and Ethics by Darlene Davis held on July 29th and 30th. Darlene Davis will also be speaking with our 3000 Club meeting this month.  We will be the 1st CAMFT chapter offering the 12 hour law and ethics that is required for Interns that are renewing and did not pass the law and ethics exam. Also, it is a great way to get ready for the law and ethics exam).  We have many wonderful trainings coming up so please look at the listing here to see what our upcoming trainings are.
And a reminder that our 90 day grace period to renew your membership has ended. If you did not renew your membership yet, you now must do so to be able to receive membership discount rates.  Notices have been sent out and if you have any questions please contact our Administrative Assistant, Heather Blessing at info@svccamft.org.
Enjoy the beautiful spring weather and I hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming events.

Sincerely,
Patricia Saint James

  March Presentation Summary

Metahabilitation: A Contemporary Model ofRehabilitation (2 CEs)

Presenter: Joyce Mikal-Flynn Ed.D., RN, FNP, MSN

Dr. Mikal-Flynn is no stranger to trauma. In fact, for 22 minutes on July 22, 1990, she actually died. She doesn’t recall the incident, only that she did not surface the water after finishing a friendly adult relay swim at her son’s high school. She would undergo extensive rehabilitation to get her back to the life she knew before her accident. But rehabilitation was of no interest to Dr. Mikal-Flynn, she was interested in going above and beyond. She recalls the doctors telling her all the things she could not do. Finally, she told them, they needed to change their attitude and tell her what she could do.She was determined to focus on her strengths and gain control of her life in the best way possible, given the devastating accident that occurred. It is through Dr. Mikal-Flynn’s experience with death that she developed MetaHabilitation.

What is MetaHabilitation? Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn describes it as our ability to surpass and exceed our previous baseline condition, not in spite of, but as a direct result of trauma. Dr. Mikal-Flynn argues that we not only heal, but we can thrive following experiences of trauma. She states that we can evolve to a more positive psychological state of well-being than before the trauma occurred.

Dr. Mikal-Flynn bases part of her system on the ideas stemming from positive psychology, more specifically Posttraumatic growth (PTG). She defines Posttraumatic growth as “The capacity for growth emerging from the survival of a traumatic experience.” MetaHabilitation is not a stand-alone therapy; rather it can be used in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities.

Dr. Mikal-Flynn discovered six stages of recovery through her research with trauma survivors that experienced Post traumatic growth. The stages of MetaHabilitation are as follows:

Stage One: Acute recovery. This can include depression, grief, and identity crisis.

Stage Two: Turning point. In this stage, one makes a decision to say “yes” to life.

Stage Three: Focus on treatments. This is a busy time where a variety of treatment modalities may be incorporated.

Stage Four: Acceptance and adaptation. This is the time to reflect and have some down time.

Stage Five: Reintegration. This is where one returns to life and participates fully, just as they are.

Stage Six: MetaHabilitation. This is where one takes on the future doing things that maybe they did not think possible at early stages. Dr. Mikal-Flynn states that a person going through the stages of MetaHabilitation may slide back a little, but they will never move down to the level they were at before the trauma.

The presentation closed with some question and answers. Discussion was generated regarding special cases such as soldiers, people in grief and loss, homeless youth, and other examples where it is critical to honor the trauma. There were some heartfelt shares and a warm closing that we too as therapists, can undergo Posttraumatic growth as a result of vicarious trauma. What a positive note to end on indeed.

If you were unable to attend Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn’s presentation, you can read more about her on her website at www.metahab.com where you can also find her book Turning Tragedy into Triumph.

Workshop Information:

This presentation will give an over view of Gottman’s newly designed, research-based Bringing Baby Home 2-day training.  Information covered in the presentation includes information that equips parents to successfully prepare for the transition to parenthood. Topic covered include:

  • ·      Strengthen their relationship
  • ·      Effectively manage stress and conflict
  • ·      Recognize and respond to postpartum mood anxiety and adjustment issues and postpartum depression
  • ·      Meet the emotional and psychological needs of a child
  • ·      Keep both parents involved in parenting

WHAT IS THE BRINGING BABY HOME PROGRAM ABOUT?

Even the strongest relationships are strained during the transition to parenthood. Lack of sleep, never-ending housework and new fiscal concerns can lead to profound stress and a decline in marital satisfaction – all of which affect baby’s care. Not surprisingly, 69% of new parents experience conflict, disappointment and hurt feelings. Our research-based Bringing Baby Home workshops prepare couples for life with baby and helps them be the best parenting team possible. In a relaxed and supportive environment, parents learn to strengthen their relationship and foster baby’s development during this challenging time. They build on what Dr. Gottman and colleagues found is the best predictor of marital adjustment after baby arrives: the quality of friendship in the marriage.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the structure of “The Sound Marital House”
  • Explain the challenges for new parents
  • List the warning signs of a relationship melt down
  • Apply the relationship skills for adults to children
  • Recognize postpartum depression and have a treatment plan for this issue.

She obtained her doctorate at the Professional School of Psychology.  The Relationship Skills Center has been recognized as one of the leading organizations in the nation in building healthy relationships, and was awarded two Healthy Marriage federal grants. Special Feature

Bringing Baby Home

By

Carolyn Rich Curtis, PhD

Even the strongest relationships are strained during the transition to parenthood. Lack of sleep, never-ending housework and new fiscal concerns can lead to profound stress and a decline in marital satisfaction – all of which affect baby’s care. Not surprisingly, 69% of new parents experience conflict, disappointment and hurt feelings.

Research-based Bringing Baby Home workshops prepare couples for life with baby and helps them be the best parenting team possible. Parents learn to strengthen their relationship and foster baby’s development during this challenging time. They build on what Dr. Gottman and colleagues found is the best predictor of marital adjustment after baby arrives: the quality of friendship in the marriage.

Bringing Baby Home combines scientific research and public education to improve the quality of life for babies and children by strengthening their families. It teaches new parents how to gain relationship satisfaction and create healthy social, emotional and intellectual development for their children.

Research shows that couples who participated in Bringing Baby Home learned the skills to decrease postpartum depression, relationship conflict, and hostility. Utilizing Gottman’s theories of relationship and other leaders in the field, couples learned how to manage stress and conflict, meet the emotional and psychological needs of a child, kept both parents involved in parenting and increased the involvement of the father in the child’s life.

Title: The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma
Author:
Bessel van der Kolk M.D
Published: 2015, Penguin Books, New York, NY
Reviewer:
Heather Blessing, LMFT

Review: This is an in depth book about how much of our trauma comes out in somatic symptoms.  This quote from the book best describes what the book is about and goes into
“The price for ignoring or distorting the body’s message is being unable to detect what is truly dangerous or harmful for you and, just as bad, what is safe or nourishing. Self-regulation depends on having a friendly relationship with your body. Without it you have to rely on external regulation—from medication, drugs like alcohol, constant reassurance, or compulsive compliance with the wishes of others.”
From research to case studies, this book provides evidence that give credence to his theories.
